It is accepted that this condition may not be treated by Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons throughout Europe. Supervised by the experienced EFAS faculty, participants of the courses will practice their techniques on cadavers. It is EFAS’s responsibility to share our knowledge in regions where foot and ankle surgery is still emerging. Our collaboration with AOFAS is now entering its third year, and we have received requests from other associations to establish cooperative agreements. However, candidates will be expected to maintain a high standard of knowledge and practical skills in the field of Trauma and Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery. To run the parameter optimisation procedure, the LISFLOOD model was run at 6-hourly steps everywhere. However, the objective function (or goodness-of-fit measure) was calculated over a daily-aggregated time series for calibration points with daily observations, to allow a fair comparison between simulated and observed discharge data.

The selection procedure produced a list of 1,137 calibration stations in 215 different catchments, 406 with 6‑hourly and 731 with daily observed discharge time series. For EFAS 4, the LISFLOOD domain area was slightly extended to include the Jordan catchment. The river network in the Balkans was also improved to better represent physical rivers in the region, with updates to the channels’ geometry reflecting the changes done to the drainage network. Compared to the previous EFAS 3 version, three additional reservoirs were added on the Sava river downstream of Zagreb to better represent the effects of large retention areas.

Situated between Vienna’s iconic St Stephen’s Cathedral and City Hall, the venue offered a unique blend of tradition and innovation, combining classical beauty with state-of-the-art facilities.The scientific content of the congress was equally outstanding. Topics included the use of artificial intelligence in hearing aids and tinnitus management, innovations in tele-audiology, and advances in cochlear implantation.The congress opened with a focus on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in audiology.

Both EFA itself as well as the Forum Alpbach Network (FAN) award around 350 scholarships to first-time participants. The two weeks in summer are a unique experience for this selected group of people, providing thought-provoking content as well as inspiring encounters with decision-makers and other generations of passionate Europeans. MEMBERSHIPEFAS is open for membership for national societies of audiology in the European countries. Each member nation shall be represented by a single Voting Representative and by two Non-Voting Representatives, appointed by the respective national audiology society if available. For a country without a national audiology society, the Board may accept as a temporary alternative another professional society or entity, which is actively engaged in audiology. Since 2011, EFAS is part of the Copernicus emergency management service and has been transferred to operational service in 2012.

Others vary from one area to another based on changes in climatology and physical factors, e.g. hydraulic soil properties. Some model parameters require calibration, which is generally obtained by tuning parameter values based on a comparison between simulated and observed discharge (Q) at river gauges. This tuning process generally aims to minimise errors in the volume and timing of simulated flow over a multi-year period.

Therefore, data previously downloaded using the sub-setting tool should be disregarded and users should download the dataset of interest again over the full EFAS domain. Validating a new score in different languages requires language-specific validation, not just the translation of an already validated score into another language. Therefore, validation in particular has been a very elaboratestatistical process involving more than 6,000 questionnaires of different languages. In 2018, development and validation of the EFAS Score was completed in 7 languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Polish). The Finnish and Turkish score versions followed 2020, the Persian version 2021, the Portuguese version 2022, the Spanish and Estonian versions 2023, the Danish version in 2024 and the Mandarin and Cantonese version 2025. In this example the hedge is eligible to be claimed as an EFA hedge as it is within five metres of arable land and although the hedge is outside the field it is under the control/responsibility of the farmer and is adjacent to the BPS claimed field.

After this term the Past Chairperson can be a member of the search committee. European Flood Awareness System

Email votes should be received at the EFAS Secretary-General 24h before the GA. When votes are tied, the Board members will make the final decision during the General Assembly. To supplement training in fellowships we introduced the annual Advanced Foot and Ankle Forum (AFAF) in 2016, a 3-day meeting specifically designed for UK Foot and Ankle Fellows, which has been a huge success and has triggered the creation of similar courses elsewhere. The EFAS Research Foundation provides further research support by giving the “EFAS Research Award – for Clinical and Basic Science” at EFAS annual conference.

NAMEThe European Federation of Audiology Societies, EFAS, is a non-profit organization, formed as a federation for national audiology societies in the European countries. Audiology is defined as the science of hearing and the alleviation of the effects of disorders of the auditory system. The countries eligible to be part of EFAS are as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The unit for soil depth in this case (i.e. using LISFLOOD model for EFAS) should be millimetres (mm). You interpretation on how the depth is defined is correct; the file gives the depth of the bottom of each layer from the surface – the soil depth for layer 1 goes to 50 mm and the soil depth for layer 2 goes till 1400 mm, and so on.

The EFAS Matrix allows organizations to prioritize external factors based on their importance and impact, providing a structured framework for decision-making. On the other hand, SWOT Analysis offers a more comprehensive assessment of an organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, allowing for a deeper understanding of the factors that may influence strategic decisions. One of the key advantages of SWOT Analysis is its holistic approach to strategic planning. By considering both internal and external factors, organizations can gain a more comprehensive understanding of their current situation and future prospects.

Overall, EFAS 4 shows a marked improvement in the hydrological performance compared with EFAS 3, with more stations achieving a higher KGE’ score as shown by the cumulative distribution function. About 60% of stations have a KGE’ of 0.75 or higher, against only 40% for EFAS 3 (Figure 5a). Improvements are found over most of the EFAS domain, with the exception of some stations in Scandinavia, Spain and central Europe (Figure 5b).

In addition, the Education Committee has been looking at ways to provide a more robust system of ensuring that both Fellowship trainers and Fellowship trainees are meeting the required criteria. These courses are aimed at Higher Surgical Trainees / ST3 onwards and are designed to teach the core of Foot and Ankle surgery in an informal and interactive environment. The emphasis is on clinical examination cases, discussion groups and typical day-to-day clinic scenarios. Although not an exam preparation course, content is taught to the standard expected EFAS Forum in the FRCS(Tr & Orth) exam; that of a day-one non-specialist orthopaedic consultant.

This does not seem realistic, as I have never seen a hydrological model or a land surface model working with these high depths of soil, unless the focus is on the deep layers. The European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) underscores that surgical procedures on the foot and ankle should only be performed by medically trained surgeons who are fully accountable for their treatment decisions and outcomes. The purpose of the Education Committee is to provide high quality training to foot and ankle surgeons from across Europe and beyond. Logbook A complete logbook of surgical cases shall be required preferably electronically for ratification by the examination board before proceeding to the examination. Knowledge Base and Practical Skills This is discussed and clarified in detail in the section on Curriculum.

This dual calibration strategy (both at 6‑hourly and daily time steps) was critical to guarantee the best possible geographical coverage as 6‑hourly river discharge data was not available everywhere. Stations where a minimum of four years of good-quality discharge data were available were selected as calibration points. By upgrading the full EFAS medium-range modelling chain to a 6‑hourly timestep, all forcing fields, including observed meteorological data to simulate initial conditions, needed to also be produced at the finer time step. For the LISFLOOD model, this includes gridded maps of precipitation, average air temperature, evaporation rate from free water surface and bare soil surface, and potential evapotranspiration for reference crop surfaces. EFAS is an operational pan-European flood forecasting system funded by the European Commission through its Copernicus programme.

Data from more than 1,800 active stations are collected on a 24/7 basis either as water levels and/or discharge at different temporal resolution, then quality checked and resampled at 1-, 6- and 24‑hour time steps. Water level data are transformed to discharge data (the information which is required by LISFLOOD) when rating curves are provided by EFAS partners. LISFLOOD is a fully distributed hydrological model, which explicitly considers the spatial distribution of physical properties across catchments and provides estimates of river discharge on the entire geographical domain. Driven by meteorological forcing data (precipitation, temperature, potential evapotranspiration, and evaporation rates for open water and bare soil surfaces), LISFLOOD calculates a complete water balance for every grid cell within the EFAS domain, currently on a 5×5 km grid. Processes simulated include snowmelt, soil freezing, surface runoff, infiltration into the soil, preferential flow, redistribution of soil moisture within the soil profile, drainage of water to the groundwater system, groundwater storage, and groundwater base flow. Runoff produced for every grid cell is then routed through the river network using a kinematic wave approach.

Supported by the EFAS Research Committee, the EFAS Research Foundation enables research and scientific work of EFAS and Foot & Ankle area, including all sub-areas of Foot & Ankle, as basic science, biomechanics, epidemiology, clinics, surgery, outcome, radiology, and others. EFAS 4.2 mainly concerns the addition of new hydrological river discharge stations in relevant layers, wtih additional improvements and general bug fixes. If you are a foot and ankle surgeon residing and working in a European country, you may apply for this membership type by choosing respective option below. A set of 14 model parameters was selected for calibration following recommendations from previous work on the LISFLOOD model and its application to EFAS. The parameters control snow accumulation and snow melting, overland flow, percolation to the lower groundwater zone, the residence time of the upper and lower groundwater zone, lakes, reservoirs and channel routing.

This offered information on nested catchments, which is very important for a distributed hydrological model calibration. However, it came with an additional challenge in terms of calibration strategy and run time, as data was generally a mix of 6‑hourly and daily discharge observed over different time periods. This was solved by dividing the EFAS domain in 1,137 sub-catchments or inter-catchments and see more by performing the calibration through a catchment-based parallelisation of the model domain.

Additionally, the EFAS Matrix assigns weights to each external factor based on their importance, while the SWOT Analysis does not. Overall, both tools are valuable in helping organizations identify key strategic issues and develop effective strategies to address them. BOFAS Education to Supplement Training

For the fairest comparison possible between EFAS versions 3 and 4, the hydrological model performance score KGE’ was calculated on simulations using the same meteorological forcing data (but aggregated to daily forcing for EFAS 3) over 1990–2017. For EFAS 4, scores were calculated on river discharge averaged over 24 hours to be comparable to the 24‑hourly simulation of EFAS 3 (also matching the calibration time step of EFAS 3). Note that calculating KGE’s over daily discharge slightly increases the score of EFAS 4. One important aspect of a hydrological model performance evaluation is to use data which have not been used during the calibration exercise, so that the evaluation is a fair analysis of the model behaviour. This is often achieved using a ‘split sample approach’, where the hydrometeorological observational record is split into two independent periods, one used to optimise the parameters through calibration, and one used to evaluate the model behaviour.

The Agriculture Weather Advisory Panel met earlier this month to discuss the impact of the recent dry weather on Scottish agriculture, including a potential shortage of animal feed over the winter months. EFAS produces 6-hourly flood forecasts (since 2020) and monthly seasonal streamflow outlooks (since 2016). The system has been fully operational as part of the  Copernicus Emergency Management Service  since 2012. EFAs make up the building blocks of our skin’s surface layers and are crucial for healthy skin function, helping produce its natural oil barrier which we often unintentionally strip back by over exfoliating and over cleansing our skin.

SCOPEThe scope of EFAS is to promote cooperation, exchange of experience and knowledge of audiology within Europe, both as a scientific field and as a hearing health service. EFAS may also represent European audiology in international forums and organizations. But when I upload the netCDF file in Python using xarray and actually check it, the soil depth for layer 1 goes till 50 meters, and the soil depth for layer 2 goes till 1400 m (1.4 km !!!).

While the EFAS Matrix provides a structured framework for evaluating external factors, SWOT Analysis offers a more comprehensive assessment of both internal and external factors. By understanding the unique attributes of each approach, organizations can leverage these tools effectively to make informed decisions about their future direction. However, one limitation of the EFAS Matrix is its exclusive focus on external factors. While this can provide valuable insights into the broader business environment, it may overlook internal factors that could also impact a company’s strategic decisions. To address this limitation, organizations may need to complement the EFAS Matrix with other tools that focus on internal factors, such as the SWOT Analysis.

EFAS products

The sub-region extraction tool has therefore been removed from the EFAS CDS entries for versions up to v4, and any area specified in cdsapi requests will return the entire domain . A technical issue linked with the processing of SYNOP data at ECMWF has impacted the quality of the SYNOP layer shown on EFAS. This does not have any impact on the EFAS service which does not use the data stream used in the SYNOP layer. Some technical issues are impacting the SOS data server with no EFAS5 forecasts available. EFAS data downloaded from the CDS in NetCDF format are incorrect between Tuesday, March 19th and Thursday, March 21st, 2024 only.

Application requirements

Our scholarship programme is for students, young professionals and change-makers who want to have an impact and become active citizens in their region. A scholarship for the European Forum Alpbach event is available to applicants from all countries and disciplines. A scholarship at EFA covers the participation fee and the accommodation for the entire duration of the event. Additionally, scholarship holders receive a daily allowance of 25 Euros per day. This error is now corrected and the data has been rearchived correctly in MARS. The v5.0 pre-release data was removed from the CDS temporarily while this was fixed.

LA optimums are around 3 to 6 percent of calories (1 tbsp., 9 to 18 grams/day), requiring about 30 IU of vitamin E. Obese people and those eating hard fats, sugar, and trans-fatty acids require more. When the conversion of EFAs to their derivatives is inhibited by the factors listed above, DHA from black currant seed oil, or EPA and DHA from fish oils and northern ocean algae can be given. Bad fats (margarines, shortenings, trans-fatty acids, hard fats, sugar and cholesterol), lack of minerals (magnesium, selenium, zinc) and vitamins (B3, B6, C, E), viruses, obesity, diabetes, aging, and rare genetic mutations can all inhibit omega 6 conversion. A second difference is that EFAs are perishable, deteriorating rapidly when exposed to light, air, heat and metals. Unlike vitamins, EFAs cannot be dried, powdered, and stored for several years.

The calibration process resulted in 14 new parameter maps over the pan-European EFAS extent, one per calibrated parameter. For each sub-catchment domain, the parameters identified by the calibration procedure were used in all grid cells, while for areas not covered by the calibration stations, default parameters were used instead. Parameter maps were then used to execute a continuous simulation forced with observations for the period Jan 1990 – Dec 2017. The simulated discharge was then compared against observed discharge from the 1,137 calibration stations, excluding the year 1990 so that the impact of the initial conditions did not affect the comparison.

Unfortunately the GCSE results were rather disappointing, which was not press-released by the County Council. There is some evidence that anti-rheumatic drugs may exert their therapeutic effects by acting as antioxidants. For example, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been shown to act as free radical scavengers (Merry et al., 1991).

Healthy Eating

Dietary recommendations, he suggests, should be based on diets similar to that used in the Lyon study. If more people knew that they could produce sufficient amounts of EPA and DHA from ALA they might be less inclined to turn to potentially decaying and contaminated fish oils. The research indicates that the only thing vegetarians and vegans miss out on by avoiding fish is the toxic pollutants that contaminate them. Poorly designed diets are thought to reduce the rate of conversion as both energy and protein are needed to drive the enzymes that convert EFAs.

Small steps to eat, drink and age well

Food poisoning generally happens when someone eats food that is contaminated with bacteria or its toxins. According to the FSA, it is estimated that up to 5.5 million people in the UK are affected by food poisoning each year (NHS Direct, 2008d). However, it is difficult to know exactly how many people are affected as not all of those affected seek medical advice. Farmed salmon are even more of a concern than wild salmon due to the concentration of POPs in the feed they eat and their fatty nature as POPs can accumulate in fatty tissue. The research investigating the links between diet and MS dates back 60 years to Dr Roy Swank’s work first at the Montreal Neurological Institute in Norway, then at the Division of Neurology at the University of Oregon Medical School in the US.

Balancing the fat

Research suggests that some components in food can act as causative agents of autoimmune disease. For example, there is strong evidence that proteins found in cow’s milk can trigger an autoimmune response leading to type 1 diabetes in genetically susceptible children. The theory with MS is that proteins from certain foods (such as cow’s milk) may also prompt the immune system to respond inappropriately and attack the myelin sheath in the brain and central nervous system. A large body of evidence shows that populations that consume high quantities of animal-based foods seem to be most affected by MS (Agnello et al., 2004).

During this time 232 women suffered a fatal heart attack and 597 a non-fatal attack. Those who consumed the most ALA had a 45 per cent lower risk of fatal heart disease. The risk was further lowered among women who also took vitamin E supplements or who had a lower intake of trans fatty acids. The authors concluded that higher consumption of foods such as oil-based salad dressings that provide polyunsaturated fats, including ALA, may reduce the risk of fatal heart disease. The increase in heart disease, arthritis, allergies and other health problems has encouraged some scientists to investigate the role of diet in these and other diseases. Many people cannot tolerate the taste or smell of fish oils, even when provided in capsules.

Healthier options for grilling and frying include soya burgers, veggie sausages and Portabella mushrooms. They do however point out that the research supports the inclusion of vegetable oils (soya bean, rapeseed, walnut and flaxseed oils) and food sources (walnuts and flaxseeds) high in ALA in a healthy diet for the general population. Another study found that supplementing the diet with borage oil (containing GLA) led to the accumulation of natural inhibitors of leukotrines (hormones that cause the symptoms of asthma) within inflammatory cells (Chilton et al., 2008).

Give your dog a home-cooked diet

The EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) run by ECMWF uses global and regional air quality ensembles for atmospheric monitoring. For longer-range forecasting, the ensemble seasonal forecasting system SEAS5 feeds products like the EU’s European and Global Flood Awareness Systems (EFAS and GloFAS). Ensembles are also commonly used for the communication of climate scenarios such as the International Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) emission scenarios. The widely publicised supposed health benefits of omega-3 fats from fish, together with dwindling supplies of fish caught from the wild, have spawned a dramatic expansion in aquaculture (farmed fish).

Anyone can see our diets have changes hugely – our ancestors would have been hard pushed to find burger, chips and a milkshake! Well, studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet indicate that the major changes that have occurred have altered the type and amount of essential fatty acids in our diets (Simopoulos, 2008). So while in many ways our bodies are potentially the same as those of our ancestors, the way we fuel it has changed drastically.

The authors of this study conclude that if sufficient ALA and DHA are consumed, total EPA production would be expected to be adequate (Davis and Kris-Etherton, 2003). Inflammatory diseases

The authors suggest that the amount of ALA needed to reduce the risk of a second heart attack can be obtained from just 2 teaspoons of soya bean or rapeseed oil, 1-2 millilitres of flaxseed oil or just 6-10 halves of walnuts per day. These unhealthy fats, found in hydrogenated fat in margarine and products made with it (such as biscuits and pastries), are also found in meat and dairy products. Alcohol inhibits activity of the enzymes that convert ALA into EPA and DHA and depletes tissues of these long chain omega-3 fatty acids (Davis and Kris-Etherton, 2003). Although the main focus of this report is human health, the environmental argument for switching to see more plant-based omega-3s cannot be ignored. We know how commercial fishing is devastating the world’s oceans and fish stocks are plummeting. Flaxseed and other plant-based sources of omega-3s are sustainable sources of this important fatty acid as well as being the healthier option.

However, as stated previously, there is convincing evidence for a protective role of both omega-6 and omega-3 fats in MS (Harbige, 2003). The authors of this study suggested that disturbed omega-6 fatty acid metabolism in MS gives rise to a loss of both long chain omega-6 fatty acids in the membranes and anti-inflammatory cytokines, particularly during the relapse phase. Three years later, in an article published in the journal Circulation, Dr J. David Spence of the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre at Robarts Research Institute in London, Canada, asked why the Lyon study was so neglected (Spence, 2002).

• As a general rule, omega-6 fats are thought to be pro-inflammatory, whereas omega-3 fats are considered anti-inflammatory (GLA is the exception as it is an omega-6 fat with anti-inflammatory properties).

A comparison of farmed salmon and wild salmon found that the farmed fish had consistently higher levels of contaminants, including PCBs. This could mean considerable health risks for those who regularly eat farmed salmon. From the age of weaning to adulthood, puppies still require good amounts of fat in their diet.

How much fat do dogs actually need in their diet?

This, in turn, enhanced the progression of atherosclerosis (the build up of fatty deposits in the arteries). It was concluded that this may contribute to the high levels of heart disease seen in populations with high cholesterol intakes. After three-and-a-half years, results showed a 20 per cent reduction in the overall death rate among the fish oil group. However, like the DART trial, the rate of non-fatal heart attacks was unchanged. It should also be noted that the large amount of omega-3 fats given (1 gram) is the equivalent of consuming a very large amount (around 100 grams) of oily fish per day. As stated, fish oils (or components of them) may also offer benefit by reducing blood-clotting.

Results showed that men who consumed the most ALA had a 40 per cent lower risk of heart disease and women who consumed the most had a whopping per cent reduction. Feeding a diet which is too high in fat can lead to obesity, heart disease and liver problems. Obesity is rising amongst pet dogs, and can potentiate chronic health issues such as diabetes, and exacerbate conditions such as arthritis. Most commercial dog foods will contain oils and fats from a mixture of animal and plant material. Red meat (beef, lamb/mutton, pork, venison, goat) and processed meats (bacon, sausages, smoked/cured/canned meats) contain higher amounts of saturated fat than poultry and fish and are known to be a risk factor for cancer.

A large number of vegetarian and vegan studies show that plant-based diets offer numerous health benefits, including the prevention and therapy of many chronic diseases including arthritis (Leitzmann, 2005). Since vegetarian and vegan diets are more sustainable, environmentally and economically, they certainly deserve more consideration in both the prevention and treatment of disease. This message needs to filter down from the peer-reviewed studies into our hospitals, schools, workplaces and homes.

This compares favourably to glucosamine, currently the most popular supplement for joint health (Reginster et al., 2001; Matheson and Perry 2003). A particular class of free radicals (called reactive oxygen species) can promote the inflammatory response that occurs in rheumatoid arthritis (Filippin, 2008).

A long-term follow-up to the DART study (Ness et al., 2002), showed that the death rate in the two groups (fish and no fish) after an average follow-up of 15 years was almost identical. So the dietary advice given to former DART participants, over a decade previously, offered no long-term protective effect. So while fish oil may offer short-term protection to people who have suffered a heart attack, this protection does not appear to stand the test of time. Monounsaturated fats are found in nuts, peanuts, olives and olive oil, avocados and rapeseed oil.

Sulfhydryl groups are compounds that contain a functional group composed of a sulphur atom and a hydrogen atom (-SH). They feature as a functional group of the amino acid cysteine and so play an important role in many biological systems. By binding to sulfhydryl groups, mercury inactivates antioxidative compounds, again, increasing free radical activity.

If you carry more weight around your middle, rather than on your hips, you have a higher risk of heart disease. The FSA’s website provides an extensive list of precautionary measures people should take when buying, storing and preparing fish. It lists 18 different ways you can minimise the risk of being poisoned (FSA, 2009). Indeed excluding all animal foods from the diet will dramatically decrease the risk of food poisoning. It is interesting to note that the fish oil capsules used in the Durham trial cost 80p per child, per day, rather more than the 65p Durham Council was spending per child per day on school meals at the time. In 2008 the cost of ingredients had risen, but to just 80p for a secondary school child per day (Durham Council, 2008).

Consumers are unsurprisingly confused; the information given is neither comprehensive nor consistent. Unfortunately misleading publicity from this and other research has encouraged companies to produce so-called functional foods such as St Ivel Advance Omega-3 milk. The advertisements implied that this milk may make children more intelligent because it contained omega-3 fatty acids (from fish).

Fruit and vegetables

A well-balanced healthy diet can help you if you are taking strong drugs for arthritis. In fact, ARC states that if you are taking strong drugs for arthritis there is even more reason to eat a good diet as it can help to protect the body against some of the side-effects of the drugs. For example steroids, such as prednisolone, can cause osteoporosis, particularly if you stay on them for a long time. Our bodies use inflammation to protect tissues from infection, injury or disease. The inflammatory process usually promotes healing but, when uncontrolled, it can also harm.

This work has been presented nationally and internationally at EFAS and AOFAS, with several research papers pending. Well of course I can’t be totally sure but I don’t see the hospital announce every surgery to the respective insurance. But one never knows.In my case I left the hospital a while after I had woken up from anaesthesia and that wasn’t planned differently either. Reforecasts are forecasts run over past dates, and those presented here are used for providing a suitably long time period against which the skill of the 30-day real-time operational forecast can be assessed. The reforecasts are initialised twice weekly with lead times up to 46 days, at 24-hour steps for 20 years in the recent history.
